Minerals or dangerous heavy metals in herbs or spices can be determined using ICP or microwave plasmas coupled with Mass Spectrometry or Optical emission spectroscopy. Active components identified with key herbs or spices are determined usually with LC or FTIR technology. Pesticides and other dangerous organic contaminants are typically determined using LC/MS and GC/MS. Authenticity or Quality can be determined in these commodities using any of the above techniques either using targeted reference methods or through profiling with chemometrics for which Agilent offers essential chemometric software tools.
