Reacts with natural killer cells and a subset of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood. The antibody is a useful aid for classification of CD56+ T/NK-cell lymphomas. Outside the hematopoietic system, CD56 is expressed in a number of tumors, including neuroblastomas and small cell lung cancer (SCLC).

Specificity	In Western blotting of homogenates of SCLC and of an undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma, the antibody labels a 29 kDa band under reducing conditions. Under non-reducing conditions the 29 kDa band shifted to a 150 kDa band suggesting that the antibody recognizes a protein consisting of at least two subunits (5).
