Considered separately, neither low bleed nor low activity individually confers a significant advantage to trace analysis. Low bleed increases the signal-to-noise ratio, but if any of the analyte is adsorbed by active sites in the column, the results are flawed. Similarly, if the column is well deactivated but the bleed rate is high, some of the signal generated by the analyte is smothered by the bleed signal. Again, the results are flawed. Only when the column exhibits both low bleed and low activity are the results reliable.
