GC Column development collaboration improves system uptime, lowers cost and wins award

Challenge

A customer was running a GC application to monitor contaminants in a process stream. The contaminants were fouling the detection system, decreasing instrument response and yielding unreliable results. As a consequence, the customer was performing routine scheduled maintenance on their system once every three weeks. The need for frequent system maintenance resulted in significant system downtime (two or more days per service interval) before the instrument could be used again.

Solution

The customer collaborated with Agilent to develop a new GC column technology designed specifically for their application. The newly developed application reduced the contamination and greatly extended the lifetime of the detection system. To address the customer’s specific needs, Agilent created a range of configurations for this new technology, leading to a new family of Agilent GC columns.

Benefit

Contamination was greatly reduced, which provided a major improvement in the lifetime of the detection system. The maintenance interval for the customer’s system was reduced from a frequency of once every three weeks to once every six to eight months. This was an excellent improvement for the customer, leading to improved productivity, increased instrument uptime and much lower cost of operation. This enhanced both the customer’s process and overall laboratory operations. For this achievement, Agilent was awarded with a prestigious global innovation award.
