Nitrosamines (in particular NDMA) are of critical importance to the water industry.  Currently the only promulgated method for nitrosamines in drinking water is EPA method 521, an ion trap based chemical ionization (CI) method developed in the early 2000s.  While this method was used in the UCMR 2 program and produced generally high quality data, there are several limitations to the method.  First and foremost, the associated instrumentation is being phased out so that should EPA ultimately promulgate nitrosamines there will be a need for alternative methods.  Second, the existing method is somewhat complex in that ion traps and CI systems are finicky and the nitrosamine method in particular can be tricky.  Additionally, the run time for the method is nearly an hour, which makes it difficult and expensive to do large numbers of samples quickly, as is needed for pilot studies. This webinar discusses the use of GC triple quadrupole technology to replace the ion trap in EPA 521 while keeping all sample preparation and other conditions the same.
