Liquid chromatography high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) is becoming increasingly popular in the clinical research laboratory. It can offer higher throughput and superior specificity to the more traditional tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) methods. In addition, LC-TOF-MS has the ability to collect full scan data, which allows for down-stream data mining. This talk focuses on time-of-fight mass spectrometry fundamentals; including theory, method development strategies, pros and cons of LC-TOF-MS as compared to LC-MS/MS, and a few lessons learned along the way.
