Atmospheric Pressure Photoionization Source (APPI)

APPI is a soft ionization method complementary to ESI and APCI that uses photo energy to ionize nonpolar small molecules not easily ionized by ESI or APCI (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)), expanding the range and classes of compounds that can be analyzed.

The atmospheric pressure photoionization source (APPI) combines proven Agilent orthogonal spray nebulization and counterflow drying gas with innovative photoionization pioneered by Syagen Technology. The long-lasting krypton lamp emits photons at energy levels high enough to ionize many classes of compounds, while causing minimal fragmentation and generating mostly molecular ions and protonated molecules.
