Fix cells with a glutaraldehyde/formaldehyde fixing solution, wash with PBS and stain with an X-gal staining solution. After as little as 15 minutes, wash cells with PBS and then view under a microscope. Transfection frequencies can be determined by counting stained versus unstained cells.
