Agilent Technologies introduces ion trap mass spectrometer with 4x improvement in sensitivity

Company offers compliance software for its ion trap ms family

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 31, 2004

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced a flagship ion trap mass spectrometer (MS) that is four times more sensitive than its predecessor. The LC/MSD Trap XCT Plus improves performance for a wide range of applications such as drug development and biomarker identification for disease research. It incorporates new detector technology and improved manufacturing processes to achieve a sensitivity specification of 250 femtograms for reserpine.

"Our goal is to continually increase the sensitivity and resolution of our ion trap products," said Ken Imatani, product marketing manager for Agilent's ion trap mass spectrometers. "There is no need to give up the inherent advantages of nonlinear ion trap technology to achieve sensitivity."

The LC/MSD Trap XCT Plus is expected to be incorporated into Agilent solutions for high-throughput protein identification and characterization.

Agilent also introduced its LC/MSD Trap Security Pack 1.0 software for the Agilent ion trap MS family. The software supports compliance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration 21 CFR Part 11 criteria and associated Good Laboratory Practice and Good Manufacturing Practice regulations. The software facilitates the use of Agilent ion trap mass spectrometers in drug discovery and development as well as other regulated processes.

The LC/MSD Security Pack software is compatible with Microsoft(r) Windows(r) 2000 and Windows XP operating systems and includes the following features:

  • Storage of all metadata and audit logs for full traceability
  • Limited system access with password protection and application timeout
  • Simple user management administration for quick setup of operators, passwords and rights
  • Protection of electronic records for retrieval throughout the records retention period, including result versioning so that processed results are not overwritten
  • Secure, time-stamped, user-independent audit trails that track all system events and user actions
  • Operational system checks to enforce permitted sequencing of steps and events, as needed
  • Electronic signing using username and password

In addition, Agilent offers system validation services to ensure the accuracy and reliability of Agilent ion trap mass spectrometers, including installation qualification (IQ) and operational qualification/performance verification (OQ/PV).

Availability

The Agilent 1100 Series LC/MSD Trap XCT Plus ion trap mass spectrometer is expected to be available in July 2004. The Agilent LC/MSD Trap Security Pack 1.0 software is expected to be available in April 2004.
