Agilent Technologies becomes first global company to introduce gas chromatograph made in and specifically for China

PALO ALTO, Calif., April 21, 2003

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the first gas chromatograph (GC) to be fully developed in, manufactured in, and tailored specifically for China. Developed at Agilent's global manufacturing center in Shanghai, the Agilent 6820 Gas Chromatograph was designed specifically for the hydrocarbon processing, food safety and environmental industries in China. The new GC has a Chinese-language display and integrates a Chinese-language version of Agilent's Cerity Networked Data System software with full-scale Chinese keyboard control.

"The introduction of the 6820 GC is a very important milestone for Agilent in China," said Wayne Chan, president and general manager of Agilent Technologies Greater China. "It not only signals the success of the knowledge transfer from Agilent's global technology network to China, but also demonstrates our long-term commitment to serve our customers in China."

"With more than 35 years of experience in supporting the hydrocarbon processing industry, we are proud to introduce a new GC tailored to support our customers in China," said Dave Willett, general manager of Agilent Technologies Shanghai. "Based on our market-leading 6890 GC, the new 6820 GC embodies Agilent's product quality and reliability and is accompanied by its industry-leading expertise and resources in applications support and services. The product's complete Chinese-language interface facilitates instrument use, simplifies data analysis, and improves lab productivity by enabling greater speed and accuracy in results."

Agilent Technologies Shanghai is the biggest single-project investment of Agilent China since its entry into the China market 20 years ago. Established as a joint venture with Shanghai Precision and Scientific Instrumentation Company (SPSIC), a subsidiary of Shanghai Electronics Development Holding Group Company, Agilent Technologies Shanghai was founded in 1995 and expanded and moved to Pudong, Shanghai in 2002. It now employs approximately 250 people. In addition to the manufacturing center in Shanghai, Agilent now has seven offices across China.

China's fast-developing chemical analysis market has maintained a double-digit yearly growth rate for several years. China's entry into the World Trade Organization brought new catalysts to market development, creating opportunities for Agilent in petrochemical, environmental protection and food safety markets. In 2000, Agilent set up its Asia Environmental Analysis lab together with the China Academy of Sciences' Research Center for Eco Environment Study to develop practical and innovative solutions for China's food safety and environmental pollutant analysis markets. With 37 percent annual order growth in 2002, China became the third largest country market for Agilent's Life Sciences and Chemical Analysis business.

The 6820 GC is now available in China and will be marketed and sold to the worldwide market in the later part of 2003. Five different consumables kits containing specially selected capillary columns and accessories for use with the 6820 GC are also available. Capillary columns offer higher peak resolution than regular packed columns and are recommended for optimum chromatography results.
