Standards Re-housed
12 August 2005
Continuing a trend of new investment in metrology
that is visible in quite a few countries now, Holland's National
Measuring Institute is the latest national standards lab to move
to brand new facilities (costing 22 million euros).
As part of their regular science features, Radio
Netherlands has produced a program that highlights the important
work performed by NMI at this new building in Delft.
Be sure to listen to the streaming audio (it's
in English) which includes explanations about the commercial and
industrial need for measurement standards, the history of the International
System of Units, maintenance of the practical realizations of the
SI base units and international cooperation.
In summary, the program provides very understandable
explanations that are aimed at educating "the man in the street".
And you'll also learn why the NMI Director is pleased that the local
sheep do not vibrate!
