Considerations for Instrument Grounding

About this Article
Written by Kuo Yen-Lung, this Application Note explains why proper grounding or earthing of electrical test equipment is important to both safety of personnel and correct measurements. It advises how poor grounding can be recognized and gives some tips for appropriate connections.

Introduction
Many people have heard of the term “grounding”, but few fully understand its meaning and importance. The impact of incorrect or absent grounding ranges from generation or susceptibility to electrical interference ("noise") to audible resonance ("humming") and, in the worst case, to where leakage of electricity through the chassis causes personal injury or damage to instrument components. For those who operate electrical equipment frequently, a complete understanding of grounding theories and applications is necessary in order to become a best-in-class technician.
