Varian, Inc. Introduces a High-Throughput Autosampler For Automated Sample Introduction

CHICAGO, Illinois, March 8, 2004

Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq:VARI) today unveiled its new autosampler - the SPS3 Sample Preparation System - that has demonstrated unparalleled speed and sampling throughput with Varian's range of AA, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and UV-Vis instruments.

For modern analytical laboratories, sampling throughput and automation are the keys to laboratory success. For both large and small operations, faster analysis translates into revenue growth, lower running costs, reduced gas consumption, and savings in labor expenses. The SPS3 base system offers multiple productivity enhancing features and can be easily re-configured by busy laboratories to further improve processing speed. In addition to its impressive stand-alone sampling capabilities, the SPS3 can be customized with Varian, Inc.'s high performance diluter to make it an ideal automated tool for sample preparation.

To maximize throughput, the new SPS3 employs a novel arm movement to deliver the fastest ever sample-to-sample speed. This ensures minimal delays when moving between samples and leads to improved throughput. For enhanced flexibility, the user can individually customize the speed settings to enable the processing of samples of varying viscosities.

The SPS3 is compatible with a wide range of low cost, commercially available sample racks providing flexibility in sample handling. The racks can accommodate a wide range of test tubes and sample vessels ranging from 13 mm OD tubes to 500 mL sample bottles. For applications where sample volume is limited, it is even possible to use small 2 mL microvials or deep well microplates (96 well) with the autosampler, enabling direct analysis and conserving precious sample. The SPS3 accommodates 3 sample racks (or 6 microplates) with a dedicated standards rack. By changing sample racks 'on the fly' as analysis progresses, sample capacity is virtually unlimited.

The SPS3 may also be configured with an automatic diluter accessory that offers 'set and forget' convenience. The precision syringe-based design incorporates a sample holding loop to ensure that samples never enter the syringe. With on-line dilution capability, it eliminates tedious and error prone manual dilution and re-analysis of over-range samples. It also allows users to pre-mix samples prone to separation or settling. Varian's SPS3 and Diluter typically delivers less than 1 % dilution error for all sample volumes exceeding 1 mL with excellent reproducibility.

"We recognize that laboratories are looking to streamline their operations and increase throughput while improving the accuracy of their analyses", said Martin O' Donoghue, vice president, Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "This new autosampler and options have been specifically designed to address these needs and help our customers get the most out of their resources."

The Varian, Inc. SPS3 sample preparation system is available for immediate order and delivery.
