New Varian, Inc. SpectrAA-Duo Doubles Atomic Absorption Laboratory Productivity

World's First Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) Providing True Simultaneous Operation of Flame and Graphite Furnace Atomizers

Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq:VARI) today introduced the SpectrAA-Duo, the world's first atomic absorption system providing true simultaneous operation of flame/hydride and graphite furnace measurement techniques. With the SpectrAA-Duo, busy environmental, pharmaceutical and chemical laboratories can double productivity through simultaneous operation and eliminate many time-consuming setup and changeover procedures.

The SpectrAA-Duo achieves these productivity gains by operating two permanently mounted atomizers -- one for flame/hydride and one for graphite furnace -- under the control of a single central computer. Each atomizer is aligned for immediate use and does not require realignment. In simultaneous operation a laboratory can obtain an additional eight hours of AAS measurement results during a single shift.

The SpectrAA-Duo is controlled by Varian's field-proven AAS worksheet software, a Windows application delivering rapid instrument setup, easy operation and simple method development for both novice and expert users. The software is compliant with U.S. FDA 21 CFR Part 11 regulations, ensuring full method and data security for SpectrAA-Duo users involved in pharmaceutical applications.

Simultaneous flame and graphite furnace operation allows measurement of the widest linear dynamic range, and hence, the widest range of samples. The SpectrAA-Duo can measure from sub parts-per-billion (furnace and hydride) to percent levels (flame). Simultaneous operation makes it possible to concurrently analyze a sample for arsenic, selenium, antimony (and other lower concentration metals) using graphite furnace techniques and iron, zinc, copper, sodium (and other higher concentration metals) using flame AAS.

With the SpectrAA-Duo it is possible to combine flame or hydride atomizers with either a deuterium or Zeeman corrected graphite furnace, depending on a laboratory's specific needs. The new system is also available with Varian's SpectrAA Fast Sequential technology, which provides the world's fastest flame AAS -- as much as 25 to 50 percent faster than other commercially available offerings.

The SpectrAA-Duo can be outfitted with a full range of sample preparation and autosampler options for extending unattended operation and further boosting productivity.
