Agilent Technologies introduces smaller, faster, lower-priced single quadrupole mass spectrometers

SEATTLE, ASMS 2006, May 30, 2006

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced its 6100 Series of single quadrupole mass spectrometers, which comprises four new instruments, including a fast-scanning model. Each of the single quads has a 40-percent smaller footprint (15 inches wide) than previous models and features high sensitivity, ease of use and Agilent's renowned reliability. The new instruments are also priced lower than their predecessors.

Agilent is a market leader in single-quad technology, and Agilent single quads are used in pharmaceutical and chemical analysis laboratories around the world. "As our best-selling LC/MS instrument, the Agilent single quad is the workhorse of the industry, delivering high performance day after day," said Fred Strohmeier, general manager of Agilent's Liquid Phase Analysis Business. "We have introduced the 6100 Series to give our customers more options tailored to their budgets and analytical needs -- from fast scanning of new drug compounds to quantifying trace-level environmental toxins."

The Agilent 6100 Series

  • The Agilent 6140 Single Quad is a new high-performance, fast-scanning model designed for high-throughput laboratories. With a scanning speed of 10,000 amu/second, the 6140 can keep pace with the Agilent 1200 Rapid Resolution LC system, the industry's fastest liquid chromatograph.
  • The Agilent 6130 Single Quad is the full-featured research-grade model, offering 1-picogram sensitivity, multi-signal capability and a full mass range to 3,000 amu.
  • The new Agilent 6120 Single Quad offers 10-picogram sensitivity and positive/negative switching capability, which previously was available only in Agilent's high-end single quad. The 6210 provides drug-discovery and development researchers with a cost-effective means of rapidly analyzing new compound libraries.
  • The Agilent 6110 Single Quad is the entry-level model and offers 10-picogram sensitivity. It is priced 18-percent lower than the previous model.

Like all 6000 Series instruments, the single quads feature Agilent's autotune function, which improves ease of use, uptime and productivity by eliminating the need for manual recalibration from sample to sample. They are also compatible with the broadest range of ion sources in the industry, each of them easily exchanged. This includes Agilent's proprietary multimode ion source, which is the only source on the market to provide simultaneous electrospray ionization (ESI) and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) data. This further improves productivity by reducing the need for repeated experimental runs and producing more information per unit of time.
