New bit-error rate analysis helps speed communications product design PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug. 22, 2005
Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced a WiMAX design exploration library for use with the company's Advanced Design System (ADS) EDA software. The library, with its new, fully coded bit-error rate analysis, helps wireless systems designers and verification engineers speed development of communications products for broadband wireless access (BWA) applications. "Catching and eliminating system-integration problems early can save hundreds of thousands of dollars in a typical design cycle," said Afshin Amini, product marketing manager with Agilent's EEsof EDA division. "With the WiMAX library and its BER analysis capabilities, designers can identify DSP and analog/RF integration problems early and avoid over-specification." The IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, often generally referred to as WiMAX, specifies air interfaces for BWA systems. The standard is expected to energize the BWA industry and open many opportunities to deploy systems in applications that were previously cost-prohibitive. WiMAX enables multiple services in a wireless metropolitan area network, such as wireless backhaul for telecommunications; high-bandwidth/high-reliability remote connectivity; E1/T1 replacements for small- and medium-size businesses; and residential wireless DSL for broadband Internet at home. Agilent's WiMAX design exploration library provides preconfigured simulation setups, signal sources and fully coded BER analysis for simulation of the circuitry used in BWA designs. It speeds the development cycle by allowing system designers to analyze a system's performance before all of its components are designed. The library works within the ADS environment and with the Agilent Ptolemy simulator to streamline design and verification of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-based, last-mile service designs. The WiMAX library also can be imported into Agilent's RF Design Environment (RFDE). This allows RFIC designers to access WiMAX test benches within the Cadence Virtuoso Custom IC platform through links developed as a result of the ongoing Agilent-Cadence alliance. About Agilent ADS, Ptolemy and RFDE Agilent ADS offers a complete set of front-to-back simulation and layout tools and instrument links for RF and microwave IC design in a single, integrated design flow. Agilent Ptolemy is a system-level simulation and design environment within ADS based on a hybrid of data flow and timed synchronous technologies that facilitates analog/RF and digital signal processing co-design. Agilent RFDE tightly integrates RF simulation technologies from Agilent ADS into Cadence's analog and mixed-signal design flow to aid in large-scale RF/mixed-signal IC design.
