Agilent Technologies adds proprietary application emulation to Network Tester for real-world testing of triple-play user experience

Solution enables performance characterization of application-aware devices under full load and security attacks

Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced the addition of proprietary protocol application support to its Network Tester application and security performance test solution. Equipment manufacturers and network operators can now more thoroughly characterize system performance of application-aware security devices to ensure their networks can handle the volatility and variability of real-world application traffic. Network Tester's powerful and easy-to-use measurement suite reduces test cycle time and helps accelerate the deployment of triple-play services.

With proprietary protocol traffic such as P2P file sharing, instant messaging and online gaming now dominating the Internet, the ability to concurrently simulate proprietary applications along with triple-play services is a vital requirement for real-world performance testing. With the latest Agilent Network Tester software, lab testers can for the first time simulate thousands of users of proprietary applications with different user addresses through a unique dynamic-session capture-replay capability.

Unlike legacy capture-replay techniques, Network Tester recreates real transport protocol sessions with unique port numbers and multiplies traffic in a realistic and scalable manner. This makes it possible to quantify the effectiveness of the latest Application Traffic Management methods such as P2P rate limiting, layer-7 "deep packet" classification and tagging, and application prioritization. For example, users can now accurately measure the real-world performance impact of application-aware firewalls that can recognize and filter undesirable traffic.

By combining the new proprietary protocol support with Network Tester's existing emulation capability, Network Tester enables greater insight into the quality of experience (QoE) under realistic traffic conditions by:

  • Emulating realistic application traffic mixes comprising VoIP, video and data on one interface as well as multiplay and P2P applications such as file sharing, interactive gaming and messaging. Test engineers can characterize system performance limits of application-aware devices and quality of experience under expected loads.
  • Simultaneously emulating multiple Denial of Service (DoS) attacks to measure performance degradation.
  • Creating realistic stateful traffic transactions without scripting over integrated IPSec, IPsecv6, PPPoE, DHCP, 802.1x and VLANs.
  • Reporting multiple real-time QoE statistics for multiple services, giving a more accurate, holistic view into service performance of the device.
  • Providing transaction variability and real-time control of traffic emulations to modify the application mix on the fly, without stopping the test to stress the device under test.
